DIY culture – born of the 1970s-anti-establishment punk scene – celebrates individual creation outside the support of professional expertise. Vancouver’s DIY history is rich and varied. One need only to recall Joey Shithead’s 1978 anti-Canada Day concert in Stanley Park being shut down by the police to summon the enduring face of the city’s counterculture. Forty years later, it has become obvious that one can produce serious creative works with limited means. This installation by three Hamilton Bank Building artists celebrates the dynamic energy of Vancouver’s music, zine and graffiti culture.
