About fiveleft leather:
Fiveleft leather marries sleek modernism with rugged saddlery tradition by combining our distinct finishes with innovative sculptural designs. All of the production is done by hand in our Vancouver, B.C. studio. Many of the tools we use are over sixty years old and the roots of our techniques go back even further.
We use only vegetable tanned leather for our leathergoods. This type of leather is derived from the ancient tanning process of soaking cowhides in vegetable tannins (tree bark). Today the hides are cured with mimosa extract, and unlike chrome tanned leather, this process uses very little toxic chemicals and leaves the leather rigid and ready to be ‘tooled’. We source our leather from a small family run tannery in the U.K.
All the surfaces of our leathergoods are fashioned by hand. We make impressions on the leather with recycled objects: bicycle spokes, hood ornaments, and bolts. Then we mix and apply dyes that highlight these textures. Our hand wrought finishes render very unique pieces where no two are alike.
